Castle of Montfrin

Montfrin is a French commune with 3,189 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitanie region .

geography

Montfrin is at the mouth of the Gardon and the Rhône . The municipality is located ten kilometers from the Pont du Gard and near the cities of Nîmes and Avignon (both 20 kilometers away). The place is dominated by the castle, which is classified as a monument historique .

history

From 120 AD the Romans began to settle in the area. The name of the place comes from Mons ( Latin for mountain ; in this case the hills in the area were meant) and ferinus ( wild ). Antoninus Pius had a tower built that would later be the keep of today's castle. In the Middle Ages, the Saint-Martin d'Entrevitz connected the place with its Rhône port. In 1180 the Templars built the Notre Dame de Malpas church . The tower of the church was built in 1372 by the Order of Malta . Opposite the town hall is the Calvière house (built in 1519), where Cardinal Richelieu lived in 1629 during the Alès edict of grace . In March 1642, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin and Madeleine Béjart met during the third visit of Louis XII. in Montfrin.

The local winery has been exhibiting the skeleton of a mammoth since May 2007 . The composite remains of the five-meter-long and four-meter-high animal represent one of only two publicly displayed skeletons of this species in all of France. The other can be found in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris . The establishment of the mammoth remains led to a massive increase in sales.
