Saint-Gervais is a French commune with 720 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitanie region .
geography
Saint-Gervais is four kilometers northwest of Bagnols-sur-Cèze and is crossed by the river Cèze .
history
The place is named after one of the saints named Gervasius . Viticulture and olive production and the use of writing began in Saint-Gervais even before Roman times. Already in the 1st and 2nd centuries people lived in the region mainly from viticulture. The Romans exported the goods over the Rhone and the Roman road towards Nîmes . The local church was built in the 9th century and has been expanded again and again. A 10.5 m² painting by the painter Jacques Clément Wagrez has been in the church since 1871 .
