La Roque-sur-Cèze is a French commune with 184 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . Since 2007, La Roque-sur-Cèze has been classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).
geography
The small medieval village was built on a limestone ledge and towers over the Cèze River at the lower end of the Gorges-de-Cèze gorge . The Sautadet cascades are in close proximity . The town of Bagnols-sur-Cèze is eight kilometers east-southeast and Orange in Provence is about 25 kilometers in the same direction (as the crow flies). However, there is no direct connection to Orange.
history
The 12th century castle was burned down by the Huguenots in 1573 and abandoned in the 19th century.
The place was bombed on August 26, 1944.
