Comps is a French commune with 1784 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitanie region .
geography
The village is close to the border with the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region on the Rhône river . Major cities such as Nîmes , Arles , Saint-Rémy and Avignon as well as Beaucaire and Tarascon are nearby .
history
The place is 2600 years old. Village life was dominated by the Pic de l'Aiguille , in whose caves people settled and from where one had a good view of the Rhône. A fortified settlement existed on the rock in Roman times.
The area was shaped by the Abbey of Saint-Roman and the attack by Charles Martell on the neighboring town of Théziers . Above all, the Rhône is decisive for the history of the place: Due to its floods and its changing course, it was of great importance for the development of the village.
In 1790 Comps was separated from the municipality of Vallabrègues on the other side of the Rhône. The modern TGV route runs through the municipality .
