Bouillargues is a French commune with 6,328 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitania region .

geography

The municipality is located 7.6 kilometers from the center of Nîmes , 54 kilometers from Avignon and 59 kilometers from Montpellier . Two important traffic axes, the N 113 and the D 135, cross in Bouillargues.

history

During the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century, the village changed hands several times. On October 12, 1572, the Catholics fought back after the Calvinists had gained increasing influence in the region. The church was destroyed and rebuilt in 1654. At the same time, the Huguenots, who still made up half of the population, built a church. On December 22nd, 1663 the demolition was ordered. In 1757 the Baron von Manduel became ruler of the village. On March 15, 1790, the village officially received parish status. The hamlets of Garons , Caissargues and Rodilhan were attached to it. Garons became independent in 1836, followed by Caissargues in 1904. Rodilhan was separated from Bouillargues in 1961. The community is an important grain producer.

Madeleine Brès , the first French doctor, was born in Bouillargues in 1842.
