Saint-Étienne-des-Sorts is a French commune with 557 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Nîmes and the canton of Bagnols-sur-Cèze .

geography

The village is located on the right lower reaches of the Rhône in north-eastern Languedoc . The river forms the border with the Vaucluse department and thus with the historic Provence region . The neighboring municipalities of Saint-Étienne-des-Sorts are Vénéjan in the northwest, Mornas in the east, Piolenc in the southeast and Chusclan in the south.

Attractions

The parish church of the village, which bears the name Saint-Étienne , was first mentioned in 1297. Originally it was Romanesque construction, which is only partially preserved today. Near the church is the parish hall (French maison communale ), which was built in 1692 and houses numerous institutions. The community is administered by the Mairie , which has been located in the old school building since the 1960s. The Hameau de Jonquier is an old farm from the 14th century that has been preserved. 300 meters north of the village are the remains of the Romanesque chapel Saint-Pierre .
