location

The place Blauzac is located on a 90 m high hill in the Pays de l'Uzège about 2 km north of the Gardon (or Gard ) and is about 18 km (driving distance) north of Nîmes . The historically significant small town of Uzès is only about 9 km northeast.

The steady decline in population that began towards the end of the 19th century can essentially be traced back to the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture . More recently, the relative proximity to the city of Nîmes has contributed to a trend reversal in the number of inhabitants.

economy

For centuries the people of Blauzac lived self-sufficient on the produce of their fields and gardens; Production surpluses could sometimes be marketed in Uzès. Wine was also grown, but the phylloxera crisis put a temporary end to this branch of the economy at the end of the 19th century. Today only a few wines are grown and marketed through the appellations Cévennes , Duché d'Uzès , Gard and Pays d'Oc . The rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) is increasingly playing a certain role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

The area was probably inhabited as early as Gallo-Roman times . The first written mentions of the place names Blandacum , Castrum de Blauzuch , Blazacum and Blauzat come from the 11th and 12th centuries; A castle ( château ) was also built at this time . As early as 1136, the French King Ludwig VI. ceded the area to the bishops of Uzès . The time of the popes in Avignon (1309-1377) was a heyday for the place. In 1382 the castle was set on fire as part of the Tuchin uprising, but then restored. In the 16th century a population of about 650 people is mentioned.

Attractions

  • The medieval castle, restored with cross-headed windows , stands opposite the church; it is privately owned.
  • The three-aisled late Gothic church dates from the 14th to 16th centuries.
outside
  • The Pont Saint-Nicolas , built in the 13th century but repeatedly renovated (today on the territory of the neighboring municipality of Sainte Anastasie ), formed the most important crossing over the Gardon between Nîmes and Uzès.
  • In the (partly abandoned) vineyards in the vicinity of the village there are several guard huts made of dry stone masonry ( called capitelles in the region ); most of them date from the 19th century.
