The Pont Saint-Nicolas de Campagnac is a medieval arched bridge in the south of France , near the villages of Blauzac and Sainte-Anastasie in the Gard department . It still serves as a road bridge between Nîmes and Uzès (D 979).
location
The bridge is located approx. 15 km (driving distance) north of Nîmes in the area of the commune of Sainte-Anastasie at an altitude of approx. 60 m above sea level. d. M .; however, it is closer to the village of Blauzac.
history
The bridge over the Gardon was built between 1245 and 1260; previously the river was crossed via fords. The bridge was often repaired and partially renewed; on August 24, 1944, it was partially destroyed by withdrawing German Wehrmacht units. During the floods of the Gardon ( gardonnades ) in 1907, 1933, 1958, 2002 and 2014 it also suffered considerable damage in some cases.
architecture
The eight-arched bridge is approx. 120 m long and a maximum of approx. 18 m high; the clear width between the slender bridge piers is between approx. 8 and 14 m. The pillars are sharpened on both sides for flow reasons - blockages of the passages by trees etc. as well as unfavorable eddies could be avoided. Some of the arches are slightly pointed - an indication of the construction period ( Gothic ). On the north side of the bridge - a little higher - there is a small former priory with a church, refectory , hostel and farm buildings.
