The Jona youth church is a youth church of the Limburg diocese in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt . The profile church is located in the rooms of the Church of St. Bonifatius .

history

In 2004, the Limburg bishop Franz Kamphaus commissioned the Frankfurt city youth pastor Werner Otto to set up a youth church in Frankfurt am Main. The St. Bonifatius congregation agreed to the establishment in its rooms and after renovation work in the church and the move of the employees of the former Catholic youth welfare office in Frankfurt into the rectory of St. Bonifatius, the youth church was opened in 2005. In 2005, the Jona Youth Church took part in the preliminary program for World Youth Day in Cologne. In 2006 the ORCA school café was opened. Since 2011, the parish of St. Bonifatius and the youth church of Jona, which share the church and other rooms, have been headed by a pastor in personal union. In 2015, the tenth anniversary of the Jona Youth Church was celebrated with a festive service with Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Löhr .

The name "Jonah" refers to the prophet Jonah in the Bible. According to their concept, the Jona Catholic Youth Church wants to open up new opportunities for young people to meet the Church and their faith. Especially its goal of unchurched to reach young people, youth church tries to do justice by treading especially in the field of cooperation with schools in new directions. In cooperation with various Frankfurt schools, days of orientation, team building seminars for school classes and thematic project days as well as a scientifically supported project to promote the professional integration of secondary school students are offered. A central pillar of the school-related youth work is the ORCA school café, which is affiliated to the youth church and serves as an open meeting point for pupils from neighboring schools and has its own program of events.

The participation of young people in all work areas of the youth church is named as an essential guideline in the concept. For example, larger events are regularly planned and carried out with young people over a longer period of time: “Living in the shadow of the skyline” (shadow theater project, 2008), “The Creation” (2009) and “The 10 Commandments” (2010). As with other youth churches, the church space is also of particular importance, "in which young people should have new experiences with spirituality and discover their own faith".

At the bi-weekly youth services, particular importance is attached to the aesthetic atmosphere (lighting technology, music) as well as an experimental design. In addition to the activities in the field of school-based youth work, the program includes offers in the areas of faith and spirituality, music, culture and leisure activities and seminars for acquiring the youth leader card . Affiliated to the youth church is the “Young Adult Forum” with offers for young people between the ages of 20 and 35. The youth church team in Jona includes the Frankfurt city youth pastor as leader as well as several youth education officers and administrative staff.

At Luminale 2014, the Jona Youth Church in Frankfurt Cathedral offered compositions of light, text and music that changed daily, among others in cooperation with the Center for Christian Meditation and Spirituality of the Diocese of Limburg . In addition, young people staged light-sound performances that were carried out by the Light & Sound team of the Jona youth church under the direction of Abydos Systems.

The Jona Youth Church is an agency for young people in the voluntary social year or in the federal voluntary service .
