antiquity

In the years 2000 and 2003 remains from ancient times were found during road construction work. The first people settled in the Mesolithic near the hamlet of Moulin d'hôpital . The area was well suited for settlement due to the nearby Buffalon stream and the flint deposits . It is believed that the country was first crossed by nomadic peoples between 8500 and 8000 BC , who returned there several times. Permanent settlement occurred in the Neolithic Age . The people lived in a village of around 250 square meters, which was surrounded by a moat. It was probably destroyed by the Romans . The Iron Age marked the beginning of agriculture in the settlement. The Romans built the important Via Domitia road in the immediate vicinity . From this time another road was discovered that had been used until the early Middle Ages. Traces of wagons indicate high road use. A tomb by the road that may have been part of a necropolis suggests that the road was the access road to the tomb. From the later phase of the Roman occupation, which began around 120 BC, a collection of houses with numerous objects found in them was found. This was roughly at the site of today's location.

Middle Ages and early modern times

Before the development of today's place, a village called Quart , which was directly on the Vistre, was the most important settlement in the municipality. It was first mentioned in 921 as villa quarto . The name is probably derived from the location on the fourth milestone of Via Domitia. In the place there was a church called Saint-Martin (Saint Martin). Quart was abandoned after it was destroyed by the Huguenots in 1573. Only the hamlet of Vicaresses has survived. On the other side of the municipality, a farm was acquired in 913 by a provost who turned it into a small monastery called Saint-Jean-Baptiste . There is now a chapel at this location.

The present place was first mentioned in 1108 in the copial book of the cathedral of Nîmes . It appears under the name Rodilanum , Rodelhanum and Rodilianum . The name goes back to an owner of the place, whose exact name is unknown. The development of the place was probably favored by the proximity to the Buffalon brook and the Vistre river as well as the important Roman road Via Domitia.

Due to its location near the important traffic axis from Nîmes to Beaucaire, Rodilhan was the scene of numerous conflicts and wars. Towards the end of the 14th and the middle of the 15th century the place was ravaged by gangs. During the Huguenot Wars , Rodilhan was destroyed twice, first by the Huguenots in 1573 and again by the Catholics in 1575 . During the reign of Alexandre de la Tour du Pin , the place was attacked by camisards on the night of February 22nd to 23rd, 1704 . They destroyed all buildings except two houses. Two children were killed in the attack.

French Revolution

Before the French Revolution , Rodilhan was owned by the Lord of Manduel. The complaints of the citizens of Rodilhan were recorded in 1789 in the Cahiers de Doléances of the Sénéchaussée of Nîmes. It listed a total of eleven objections and demands. In April 1791, a Catholic army was formed across the region under the leadership of the Mayor of Manduel after a petition by Catholic citizens had been issued in Nîmes. The pastor joined the army together with some volunteers from Rodilhan. Several civilians were killed.

Origin of the community

On December 10, 1790 Rodilhan was assigned to the municipality of Bouillargues together with Caissargues and Garons . The citizens of Garons filed a complaint against this condition in 1832 and became an independent parish in 1835. Caissargues followed in 1904. From 1889 onwards Rodilhan's independence was discussed by a commission. In 1907 and 1936 unsuccessful motions were submitted to the General Council . In 1961, the parish was finally formed by the prefect's decree .

Riots in 2011

On October 8, 2011, violent riots broke out because of an action by an anti-bullfighting group. The group called Sauvons les animaux (Let's save the animals) stormed the bullring . Several dozen people were involved in stopping the bullfight that was taking place. This resulted in them being forcibly removed from the scene. This happened under the eyes of Jean-Paul Fournier , Mayor of Nîmes, who was a spectator in the audience. As a political consequence of the action, Senator Roland Provinelli accused him of not responding appropriately and not intervening. Fournier rejected the allegations as unfounded. He called the police and did everything necessary, but regretted the violence.
