Pujaut ( Occitan Puejaut ) is a French commune with 4136 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department and in the Occitanie region .

geography

Pujaut is eight kilometers north of Avignon on the western bank of the Rhone . The municipalities of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon , Rochefort-du-Gard , Tavel and Roquemaure are in the vicinity .

history

The first inhabitants of the Podium Altum were mainly hunters and fishermen. In 1882, devices that date to the Bronze Age ( 2200 BC ) were discovered at the village pond . The higher areas were covered with forest and offered little arable land. The houses were later towered over by a castle that was destroyed during the Albigensian Wars .

During the Huguenot Wars , Pujaut was captured by the Protestants in 1567, who withdrew three years later after setting fire to part of the village. At that time, the inhabitants settled the upper part of the village, which was surrounded by a village wall and a moat. Another important settlement center was the Canon district around the Saint-Vérédème chapel.
