Vineyards around Tavel

Tavel ( Occitan Tavèus ) is a French commune with 1979 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitania region ( Languedoc-Roussillon until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nîmes and the municipality of Gard Rhodania . Tavel is located approx. 15 kilometers northwest of Avignon and 20 kilometers southwest of Orange at an altitude of 86  m above sea level. NN . Archaeological excavations have shown that the area was already in the 6th – 2nd centuries. Millennium BC Was inhabited. The discovery of a Roman villa near the wine cooperative and finds of grape seeds and wood residues from a wine press are evidence of viticulture in Roman times.

In 1636 the first cadastral entries of vineyards can be found. Tavel soon established itself as one of the best rosé wines in France. In the 19th century, shortly before the phylloxera infestation , 700 hectares of vineyards were planted.

Economy and Infrastructure

By far the most important economic factor in Tavel is viticulture - 119 winegrowers are based in the community. In addition, the community lives from tourism and from the mining of limestone (a type of marble with the names Tavel Bleu and Tavel Rose ).

The A 9 motorway runs through the municipality of Tavel from Orange to Spain with a connection east of Tavel and a rest area called Tavel west of the town center. The high-speed line LGV Méditerranée touches the southeast of the municipality of Tavel.
