Montmirat is a French commune in the Gard department in the Occitanie region with 433 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
geography
The municipality of Montmirat is located in the western center of the Gard department in a slightly hilly and rather sparsely populated landscape. This is located between the densely populated region further south along the Mediterranean coast and the Cevennes Mountains beginning further north near the city of Alès . The center of the city of Nîmes is around 25 kilometers by road from Montmirat to the south-east. An important regional road, the D6110, runs through the town, which connects to Montpellier to the south and Alès to the north. A few kilometers to the south, it also provides the connection to the D999 leading to Nîmes.
The neighboring municipalities of Montmirat are Moulézan in the north, Fons (point of contact) in the northeast, Saint-Mamert-du-Gard in the east, Crespian in the south and Cannes-et-Clairan in the west.
Culture and sights
In what is now the municipality are the remains of a Roman quarry called Le Roquet . It has been listed as a Monument historique since 1987 . In addition to a Catholic church, which was built in the neo-Gothic style in the 19th century , Montmirat also has a Protestant church. There is also the Catholic chapel Notre-Dame-de-Jouffe in the community , which dates from the Middle Ages and was once part of a monastery.

In 1793 the community was inhabited by 194 people. Throughout the 19th century the number remained almost constant with certain fluctuations. From around 1930 a downward trend began, which ended in 1982 with only 135 inhabitants. Subsequently, there was a slight increase in population, before the number of residents grew rapidly at the beginning of the 21st century and doubled in little more than a decade.
