geography

Landscape outside the town center

Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols is about ten kilometers southwest of Pont-Saint-Esprit and just as far northwest of Bagnols-sur-Cèze . It is located between the Rhone Valley to the east and the Cevennes mountains that begin to the west . The Cèze , in whose valley the village lies, runs along the southern edge of the village. In addition, the river represents the border to the neighboring municipality of La Roque-sur-Cèze . In addition, the Rodières and Valbonne streams flow through the municipality and each flow into the Cèze. The northern part of the municipality is characterized by largely forested hill country. The forest area is called Forêt de Valbonne and includes the Chartreuse de Valbonne Abbey , which is, however, in the territory of the commune of Saint-Paulet-de-Caisson .

The neighboring municipalities of Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols are Salazac in the north, Saint-Paulet-de-Caisson in the northeast, Saint-Michel-d'Euzet in the east, La Roque-sur-Cèze in the south, Cornillon in the west and Saint- Christol-de-Rodières in the north-west.

Infrastructure

The regional road D980 runs through the village , which is oriented on the banks of the Cèze and runs in an east-west direction from Bagnols-sur-Cèze to Montclus . The connection to national traffic is established via Bagnols-sur-Cèze.

Culture and history

Archaeological finds indicate that the area of today's municipality was already inhabited by humans in the Stone Age . From the 7th century BC there are traces of clay pots that were found at the foot of the hill and were made by the Etruscans . Amphorae from the Greek colony of Massalia , today's Marseille, were found from this period . This provides evidence of a trade connection to the city. At the same time it is documented that a trade route ran north of the place, which also connected the region with the right bank of the Rhone. Traces of human settlement have also been preserved from the time of the Roman occupation and the post-Roman period in the 5th century.

The current place was first mentioned in 1232. The addition of Carnols to the name has the meaning of "stone", so that it identifies Saint-Laurent as a village built on stone or a rock. The location on the Cèze was of particular importance for the development of the place, which is still evident today in the large number of pumping systems near the river. The Saint-Laurent-de-Carnols Lavoir was restored in 2009 with the help of an initiative. The townscape is also characterized by several wells, which ensured the local water supply until well into the 20th century.

In 1793 the community was inhabited by 325 people. This was followed by a slight increase and various fluctuations, and in 1901 with 342 residents there was no significant change compared to the previous century. In the first half of the 20th century there was a sharp decline in the population level, which reached its lowest point in 1962 with 174 inhabitants. This resulted in significant growth, which was particularly strong in the 1990s and allowed the population to grow beyond its original level.
