Terence Copley
Terence Copley (born August 19, 1946 in Sheffield in England , † January 17, 2011 in the county of Devon in England) was an English theologian , university teacher and author who campaigned for religious education in schools and universities in his country.
Life
Copley grew up in a Methodist home in the East End of Sheffield , but was a Quaker for decades . He completed his studies at the University of Nottingham and then worked from 1968 as a religion teacher in public schools and most recently as headmaster. This time was interrupted by a job at the University of York . At the same time, he was the author of over twenty books on religious education as well as articles in magazines and a speaker at scientific conferences.
Copley went to the University of Exeter in 1997 as Professor of Religious Education until 2007 . 2008 awarded him the Archbishop of Canterbury the honorary doctorate , a Lambeth degree as Doctor of Divinity (DD). Since 2007 the theologian has been a professor of educational science with a focus on religious education at Oxford University.
Copley died on January 17, 2011 and was buried ten days later in Devon.
