Building history

Wat Si Phichit Kirati Kanlayaram was founded in the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom during the reign of King Sai Lue Thai in 1403.

In 1956, during excavations by the Fine Arts Department, a stone inscription was found on the temple grounds, which has since been called "Stone Inscription 46" (also: Inscription XLVI ). The inscription consists of a slab of greenish slate about six centimeters thick , the lower part of which is missing. It is about 72 centimeters high. The stone inscription is said to remind of the establishment of Wat Si Phichit Kirati Kanlayaram by the Queen Mother "Satṃtec Braḥ Rājajananī Srī Dharmarājamātā Mahātilakaraṭanarājanārtha" and her son "Satṃtec Mahādharrmarājādhipatī Srī Surīyavaṅammar III. At the same time she wants to put down in writing the declaration of independence of the Sukhothai Kingdom of Ayutthaya in 1400.

The Queen Mother further describes that she invited "Satṃtec Braḥ Mahā Śrī Kirti" ( สำ เด จ พระ มหา ศรี กิ รติ ), the leader of a group of monks who had just made their monastic vows in Kamphaeng Phet , to settle in the temple . In the year 1403 she gave the temple a "Śrī Mahābodhi" ( ศรี มหา โพธิ ), the so-called Bodhi tree , under which the Buddha received his enlightenment. Then the text breaks off on the inscription 46.

The following attractions are located on the temple grounds:

  • A majestic Chedi in “Sinhala” or “Sukhothai style” stands on a square base with a side length of 15 meters. There is a niche for a Buddha statue on all four sides . In front of the niches are crescent-shaped stepping stones made of bricks , which are decorated with stucco. Since there were strong Sinhalese influences in Sukhothai in the 14th century , they should probably be reminiscent of the "Sandakada Pahana" (moonstones) from ancient Sri Lanka .
  • The foundations of a 15 × 25 meter assembly hall ( Wihan ) lie east of the chedi.
  • Eleven smaller chedis are scattered across the temple grounds.
  • A moat surrounds the ensemble.
