The Wat Chedi Si Hong ( Thai วัด เจดีย์ สี่ ห้อง , temple of the Chedi with 4 rooms ) is the ruins of a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Sukhothai , Sukhothai Province in the northern region of Thailand .

location

Wat Chedi Si Hong is located about two kilometers south of the southern city gate ( ประตู น โม - Pratu Namo) outside the Old City (Mueang Kao - เมือง เก่า ) of Sukhothai. Wat Chetuphon is diagonally across the street from him .

Wat Chedi Si Hong is part of the Sukhothai Historical Park .

Building history

Wat Chedi Si Hong was founded in the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom , probably by King Li Thai towards the end of the 14th century.

Excavations by the Fine Arts Department took place on the temple grounds in 1963 and 1969, and the buildings were restored from 1970 to 1971.

Attractions

The following attractions are located in the area of ​​Wat Chedi Si Hong:

  • A large, bell-shaped chedi in the "Sri Lankan style" stands on a high, square base eight meters on a side. The remains of unique stucco reliefs can be seen around the base . Many-armed deities carry flower vases, their clothes and jewelry are evidence of the fashion in the Sukhothai kingdom . The front parts of lions and elephants peek out of the base between the deities.
  • The 19 × 25 meter assembly hall has round laterite columns and a small vestibule to the east. The legs of a large seated Buddha statue can be seen in front of the western brick wall.
  • A small ordination hall with remains of the boundary stones ( Bai Sema ) lies in the north of the temple.
  • The bases of several smaller chedi are scattered across the site.
  • Other stucco reliefs found in the temple are now in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum .
