The Wat Chetuphon ( Thai วัด เช ตุ พ น , Temple of Jetavana ) is the ruin of a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Sukhothai , Sukhothai Province in the northern region of Thailand .

location

Wat Chetuphon is located about two kilometers south of the southern city wall, which encloses the historic old town of Sukhothai. Wat Chetuphon is part of the Sukhothai Historical Park .

Building history

Wat Chetuphon was built during the Sukhothai Kingdom . Since it is mentioned in a datable stone inscription (" Wat Sorasak Inscription", #XLIX), it must have been built before 1412.

The temple was restored by the Fine Arts Department between 1970 and 1972 .

Attractions

The following attractions are located in the area of ​​Wat Chetuphon:

  • A moat and brick wall surround this temple. In the center is a large brick Mondop , each one at its four outer walls stucco - Buddha sculpture with different postures ( Mudra ) is. The eastern figure represents a striding Buddha, the northern one sitting, the western one standing and the southern one reclining Buddha. The two large statues in the west and in the east are so-called "Phra Attharot" ( Attharasa : Pali for eighteen; the statue is eighteen cubits tall, which is 8.3 meters). They were likely created in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century.
  • The special thing about this temple is the use of slate in the galleries around the mondop and the door frame.
  • In the west there is a somewhat smaller Mondop with a Buddha statue, which the locals call "Phra Sri Ariya" ( Maitreya ) . Traces of black floral patterns can be seen on its walls.
  • In front of the Mondop is a meeting hall ( Wihan ) , of which only the foundation walls and a few fragments of columns can be seen today.
  • There is an ordination hall ( ubosot or bot ) about 100 meters south of the moat . It stands on a slightly elevated mound and has two sets of Bai Sema (boundary stones).
