Place and castle Belcastel

Belcastel is a French commune with 191 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aveyron department , Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Villefranche-de-Rouergue and the canton of Enne et Alzou . It is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

geography

The medieval village lies on the banks of the Aveyron in a narrow bend in the river between Rodez (24 km) in the east and Villefranche-de-Rouergue (38 km) in the west.

Attractions

  • The castle Belcastel with foundations dating from the 9th century.
  • The stone bridge over the Aveyron with five arches, built by Seigneur Alzias de Saunhac in the 15th century.

Personalities

The architect Fernand Pouillon , who among other things did a great job renovating the château, spent his old age in Belcastel.
