Charles Gide

Charles Gide (born June 29, 1847 in Uzès , † February 1932 in Paris ) was a French economist and cooperative expert. He was also the uncle of André Gide .

life and work

The son from a Protestant family taught as a professor at the universities of Bordeaux, Montpellier, at the Sorbonne and most recently at the Collège de France , but was also active in the social field. He supported the movement of the Université populaire and the Union pour la Vérité founded by Paul Desjardins in 1892. Gide was a great friend of the cooperative idea , which he represented in both the agricultural and consumer cooperatives as an instrument of class-reconciling socialization .

On the occasion of the Paris World Exhibition of 1889 (on the centenary of the French Revolution), Gide designed the vision of a "cooperative republic" that could be realized in 1989. Gide's large account of political economy was considered a standard work in France for decades, as was his dogma history, which he wrote together with Charles Rist . The latter was published by Franz Oppenheimer from 1913 in Germany in several editions ( History of Economic Doctrines ). Gide was the founder of the Revue d'économie politique . A comprehensive edition of works in French has been published by L'Harmattan (Paris).
