Christ and St. Martha, detail from the raising of Lazarus (1461)

Nicolas Froment (* around 1435 in Uzès ?; † around 1484/1485 in Avignon ?) Was a French painter . He belonged to the so-called Second School of Avignon .

Life

Little is known about Nicolas Froment's life; His place of birth is also controversial, as his work reveals his knowledge of old Dutch painting (e.g. Dierick Bouts ), so his youth and his artistic training are more likely to be in Picardy . Afterwards he is said to have undertaken a trip to Northern Italy - the Lazarus altar , which is now kept in the Uffizi , is said to have been made here around 1461 . After that he must have come to Provence , because around 1465 he is recorded in Uzès; later documents indicate that he owned several houses there. A work contract has been received in which he undertook on February 12, 1470 in Aix to paint an altarpiece for the widow Cathérine Spifami ; the death of Mary should be depicted on the central panel, and the saints Mary Magdalene and Catherine on the side panels.

Only a single one of Nicolas Froment's works is signed and dated ( The Raising of Lazarus , 1461), but art-historical research has ascribed a number of works to the painter that were created during his time; however, none of these attributions can be regarded as certain. In the 1470s he could have worked for René I , the "Good King René", extremely popular in Provence; The Matheron diptych , which René and his second wife Jeanne de Laval shows, dates from 1474/5 . His most famous work is possibly the triptych of the Burning Bush in the cathedral of Aix-en-Provence , which was originally in the king's burial chapel in the Carmelite monastery of Aix. An interesting late work by the artist could be the Pérussis altar dated around 1480 (today in the Metropolitan Museum in New York) - it contains, among other things, the first depiction of the Pont Saint-Bénézet , the medieval bridge of Avignon.
