Firminus von Uzès ( French Firmin d'Uzès , Catalan Fermí d'Usès , * around 480 in Narbonne ? † October 11, 553 in Nîmes ?) Was the fourth bishop of Uzès known by name . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church ; his feast day is October 11th.

Name confusion with the bishop and martyr Firmin the Elder of Amiens († around 303) or his successor Firmin the Younger of Amiens is possible.

Vita

Firminus was probably born around 480 as the son of Senator Tonantius Ferreolus and his wife Industria. Despite inconsistencies in the chronology, he probably succeeded Bishop Ruricus of Uzès in 538 . He took part in the councils of Orléans in 541 and 549 . In 551 he was present at the Council of Eauze . He died two years later and was buried in the Saint-Baudile church in Nîmes, which he founded.

Adoration

A glass coffin with his remains ( relics ) is shown in his Church of the Holy Sepulcher . Otherwise there are no known places or churches named after him in the south of France or in Catalonia.

Representations

Medieval representations of the Firminus of Uzès are unknown; modern representations are extremely rare and show him in the bishop's robe.

Remarks

  1. Some researchers put his date of birth in the year 516 in order to compensate for a chronology problem in his vita . However, he would have become bishop at the age of 22.
