Jürgen Gelsdorf (* 19th January 1953 in Duisburg ) is a former Bundesliga player of Bayer 04 Leverkusen and football coach and current functionaries .
Athletic career
player
For the 1972/73 season, the 19-year-old young footballer Jürgen Gelsdorf came from MSV Duisburg to Arminia Bielefeld in the Regionalliga West . After the forced relegation from the Bundesliga in 1971/72, the "Alm" had to be rebuilt. They relied on talents like Hans-Jürgen Wloka ( Borussia Mönchengladbach ) and Bernd Wehmeyer (own amateurs) and therefore gave the defensive talent Gelsdorf a contract. Bielefeld struggled in the last two rounds of the Regionalliga West (11th place 72/73; 14th place 73/74), but for Gelsdorf it brought competition practice in 56 appearances with one goal. Improved as a result, he mastered the increased demands in the newly created 2nd League North in the rounds 1974-76 . The Arminia even played for promotion in 1974/75 and in 1975/76 they were in the secured midfield. Gelsdorf played in 64 missions with three goals on the defensive of Arminia. With Erhard Ahmann (44-time amateur national player) he had a good teacher as a coach and was therefore noticed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen scouts . He moved to Leverkusen for the 1976/77 round. After winning the second division championship in 1977/78 from Arminia Bielefeld, he seemed to have chosen the wrong club, but twelve months later, after the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga with Bayer 04 in the 1978/79 season, he had everything right made. In the championship round he had played all 38 games and scored eight goals. In the rounds of 1976-79 he was one of the most enthusiastic and reliable players for Leverkusen in a total of 107 games with 17 goals in the 2nd division north. Under the direction of the promotion coach Willibert Kremer it went into the Bundesliga. The former FIFA coach and Bayern coach Dettmar Cramer then continued to refine the defensive qualities of the now experienced player from 1982 to 1985, before Gelsdorf then started his active playing career with six in the 1985/86 round under the former DFB coach Erich Ribbeck Let the stakes fade away.
Trainer
The change from the player to the coach side went smoothly. From July 1, 1986, Gelsdorf was a full-time youth coach at Bayer 04. On July 1, 1988, he moved to the side of the new head coach Rinus Michels as assistant coach . On April 13, 1989, he became Michels' successor and was head coach until May 31, 1991. Despite the additions of Jorginho (Flamengo Rio), Martin Kree (VfL Bochum), Sven Demandt (Fortuna Düsseldorf), Andreas Thom (Berlin FC Dynamo), Franco Foda (1. FC Kaiserslautern) and Ulf Kirsten (Dynamo Dresden), Bayer succeeded not the leap to the top of the table in the Bundesliga. This was the main reason for his replacement on May 31, 1991.
He then worked for various clubs in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga and in the regional soccer league . From October 3, 1991 to November 6, 1992 he was under contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach . With the Gladbachers he reached the final of the DFB Cup against the second division Hannover 96 in 1992 , which however was lost 3: 4 on penalties. He then moved to VfL Bochum for two years and from 1995 to 1997 he coached SC Fortuna Köln . At the beginning of the 1997/98 season, Gelsdorf was hired by KFC Uerdingen 05 , where he was released in September 1998 after a year and a half. In November of the same year he became coach of VfL Osnabrück - at the end of the 2002/03 season he left the club at his own request. His last position as a professional trainer was Rot-Weiss Essen from 2003 to 2005 .
Career as a football official
On October 1, 2005, Gelsdorf was appointed as the successor to Ralf Minge as head of the Bayer 04 Leverkusen youth performance center. With that he returned to his first coaching station. On May 8, 2007, the general meeting of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen elected him to head the football department. He thus succeeded the late Kurt Vossen . In December 2015, at the age of 62, Gelsdorf ended his position as head of the youth department in order to take part in early retirement . However, he will remain the head of the football team at TSV and will continue to take care of the women's and traditional teams.
