Banesto (officially Banco Español de Crédito, SA ) is a Spanish credit institution. It was listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange until May 3, 2014 , after which the shares were exchanged for shares in Santander.

The bank is part of the Grupo Santander group , which Banesto has taken over in full. Banesto is one of the five largest financial companies in Spain and has over 1700 branches.

In December 2012, Grupo Santander announced that it would completely dissolve the Banesto company in Grupo Santander by May 2013 and continue to operate the branch network and banking business under its own name.

Caso Banesto

In 1993 and 1994 the Caso Banesto caused a sensation. Due to a shortfall in cover, the board of directors, led by Mario Conde , considered investing in the US bank JP Morgan . However, this plan was prevented by the Banco de España , which removed the board in December 1993 and sold the bank to Grupo Santander the following year . The trial has been described as Spain's longest-running white-collar crime trial, with Mario Conde sentenced to several years in prison.

Cycling

Outside of Spain, the name Banesto is known as the former sponsor of the cycling team of the same name , which among others supported the successful cyclist Miguel Induráin . After 2005, the bank withdrew as a sponsor.
