Castries [dt. kæsˈtriːs ] is the capital of the Caribbean island state of St. Lucia and has around 3,661 inhabitants in the urban area and 16,134 in the suburban area. It is located in the quarter of the same name on the northwest coast of the island and is about 65 kilometers from the Martinique capital Fort-de-France .

Castries is the seat of the Archdiocese of Castries .

history

Castries was built by the French between 1765 and 1768 and named after Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix de Castries , marquis de Castries in 1785 . In 1794, Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathearn renamed the city "Charlottesville" after his mother, Queen Charlotte of England . In April 1796 the city was bombarded with cannons and completely destroyed by the fire. Also in the years 1813, 1927 and 1948 the city burned out completely.

Once in 1863 import the first coal-laden ship to the port Castries, a coal industry, but from 1906 due to the war and the construction of the developed in the city of Panama Canal in 1914 and the Great Depression in 1927 again broke off.

economy

The city's port is considered one of the best in the West Indies . Mainly bananas , but also sugar cane , rum , syrup , cocoa , coconuts , oils and various tropical fruits are exported. Not far from the city is the George FL Charles Airport .

Culture

In 1973 the Folk Research Center (FRC) was founded, which is dedicated to the documentation and research of everyday culture, u. a. the rich tradition of the orally transmitted stories of the "koudmen", the Afro-Caribbean Creole- speaking (older) islanders. It has a corresponding sound archive and the most important library in the country. It offers language courses on local Kwéyòl and has held the Jounen Kwéyòl , Creole Day, one of the most important popular festivals on St. Lucia, every year since 1984 . The Folk Research Center has been based on Mount Pleasant above the old town of Castries since 1999. In 2017, Patrick AB Anthony (* 1947) was named after him in honor of his longtime director.
