Alfredo Duvergel

Alfredo Duvergel Adams (born April 2, 1968 in Guantánamo ) is a former Cuban boxer . He became world champion of amateurs in 1997 in the light middleweight division.

Career

Alfredo Duvergel started boxing in 1980 in a boxing club in his hometown of Guantánamo . He has remained loyal to this club throughout his career. He was southpaw, d. that is, his hitting hand was the left hand. As an adult, at a height of 1.69 meters, he boxed mostly in the world, semi-middle and middle class. Middleweight, where he was a stocky guy, but who put great emphasis on a solid technique. However, he was not a very strong boxer and won most of his fights on points.

Already at the age of 17, Alfredo Duvergel drew attention to himself when he was behind Carlos García and others in the Cuban light welterweight championship . Radames Castillo took 3rd place.

After that, however, it was not until 1987 before he reappeared. He finished this year at the big international tournament of the Cuban boxing association "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" welterweight the 2nd place after a point defeat in the final against Juan Carlos Lemus . After that, he finished 2nd in welterweight at two tournaments in Europe . In Berlin he lost at the TSC tournament in the final against Siegfried Mehnert just on points (2: 3 judges' votes) and in Ostrava he lost in the final of the "Vaclav Prochazka" tournament against Alexander Ostrowski from the Soviet Union on points. In the same year he then won the title at the Central American Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, with a clear victory over Humberto Aranda from Costa Rica.

In 1988 Alfredo Duvergel was defeated in the Cuban welterweight championship against Juan Carlos Lemus on points. But neither he nor Lemus could go to the Olympic Games in Seoul , as these games were also boycotted after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles at the behest of Fidel Castro for reasons unknown today.

Due to weight problems, Alfredo Duvergel switched to a higher weight class in 1989, where he immediately went to the middle weight (up to 75 kg body weight). In this new weight class, he finished 2nd in the Cuban Championship after a loss in the final against Ángel Espinosa . Against the same boxer he lost in the final of the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament in Pinar del Río. On the occasion of a trip to Europe he was then defeated in Halle (Saale) in the final against Henry Maske from Frankfurt (Oder) with a very narrow 2: 3 judge's votes. With a demolition victory in the first round over Freddy Figueroa from Puerto Rico, he then won the title at the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Santo Domingo in 1989 .

In 1990 Alfredo Duvergel reached the Cuban Middleweight Championship after a loss in the semifinals against Orestes Solano only 3rd place. He was therefore only used at the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Venezuela this year , but there won the middleweight final over Gilberto Brown from the American Virgin Islands on points.

In 1991, Alfredo Duvergel was injured for most of the year, so that he was only able to fully intervene in boxing events again in 1992. That year he won his first Cuban championship with a points win over Juan Carlos Lemus , where he trained in the light middleweight division. He then started in this weight class until the end of his career. Although he also defeated Juan Carlos Lemus at the "Giraldo Cordova Cardin" tournament, it was not him but Lemus who was sent to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , where he also won the gold medal.

In 1993, Alfredo Duvergel was then used for the first time at a major international championship, the World Championship in Tampere . He won there over Arkadi Topajew from Kazakhstan (17:10), Malik Beyeroglu from Turkey (7-0) and. Geir Hitland from Norway (6: 1) on points, but lost in the final against the Romanian Francisc Vaştag on points (3:14) and thus finished 2nd.

In 1994 he was able to defeat Francisc Vaştag clearly on points (15: 5) at the AIBA Challenge Match in Dublin , but lost to this just as clearly with 10:17 goals at the World Cup in Bangkok . At the 1995 World Cup in Berlin , Francisc Vaştag was his opponent in the final. Alfredo Duvergel had previously defeated four opponents on points in this championship. In this final Vaştag clearly dominated again and won over Rudolfo Duvergel with 12: 4 goals. For Duvergel only the World Cup silver medal remained .

In the 1996 Olympic year, Rudolfo Duvergel was nominated for these light middleweight games after winning his fourth title at the Cuban Championships, where he defeated Aníbal Rodríguez on points. In Atlanta, the events in the ring developed very favorably for him, because his feared opponent Francisc Vaştag was thrown out of the race by German starter Markus Beyer with a clear win on points (17:10) in the first round. He then won over Jozef Gilewski from Poland (10: 2), Sergei Gorodnischew from Ukraine (15: 2), Antonio Perugino from Italy (15: 8) and Jermachan Ibraimow from Kazakhstan (28:19), each clearly on points. In the final for the Olympic gold medal , he met the American whiz kid David Reid and led high on points in the third round. The Olympic gold medal was already within reach for him when he was hit by Reid and counted by the referee. Olympic champion was Reid and Alfredo Duvergel received the silver medal . In the Cuban camp, however, they did not agree with the referee's decision, because they were of the opinion that Alfredo Duvergel was ready to fight again in time after the rainfall.

So Alfredo Duvergel had to wait a year before he finally won a major international title. At the 1997 World Championships in Budapest , he won the light middleweight title with confidence, winning points over Rytis Zavadskis from Lithuania (11: 3), Frederic Esther, France (11: 5), Andrei Gogolew , Russia (19: 5) and Yermachan Ibraimov (9: 7).

He then resigned, but tried a comeback in 2000, which he did not quite succeed, because he lost in the semi-finals of the Cuban Middleweight Championship against Jorge Guiterrez on points and thus had no chance for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney to be nominated. In 2001 he went back to the Cuban championship. Starting in the light heavyweight division, he even fought his way to the final, in which he was defeated by Humberto Savigne Perez on points (13:16).
