Gerald Preinfalk
Gerald Franz Preinfalk (born June 9, 1971 in Freistadt ) is an Austrian saxophonist who is at home in both jazz and classical music.
Live and act
Preinfalk, who grew up with brass music , began taking clarinet lessons at the age of nine; at the age of 15 he switched to the saxophone. In 1990 he began studying instruments at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Otto Vhrovnik and Wolfgang Puschnig . In 1993 he continued his studies at Berklee College of Music with George Garzone ; in 1998 he studied classical saxophone with Serge Bertocchi in Paris .
Preinfalk has been a member of the Klangforum Wien since 2000 . Guest performances have taken him to orchestras such as the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic and the Stuttgart State Orchestra ; he also performed as an interpreter of new music with ensemble xx. century and the ensemble counterpoints . Bernhard Lang wrote a solo concert for Preinfalk with the Wiener Symphoniker , Roland Freisitzer (2011) and Norbert Sterk (2010) composed chamber music works for him.
In jazz genre he played with Django Bates , Peter Madsen , Don Byron , Terry Bozzio , Alex Machacek , Breinschmid , Harri Stojka , the Flip Philipp - Ed Partyka Dectet and Yodelgroup of Christian Muthspiel . He belonged to big bands like Nouvelle Cuisine , the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra , the Jazz Big Band Graz and the Vienna Art Orchestra . Preinfalk's own music projects were the “Paier / Preinfalk Project” with Klaus Paier (2000), “More than Tango” and “Saion” (2004), “Tan Go Go” (2005) and the “Giuffre Zone”, in which he was a member Christoph Cech and Per Mathisen interpreted the music of Jimmy Giuffres . Most of these projects are documented on phonograms. Since 2007 he has also appeared in a duo with the Brazilian guitarist Alegre Corrêa , which was occasionally expanded in different line-ups. As a studio musician, he also worked with Willi Resetarits and Maria Bill . He also worked with Savina Yannatou , Lucía Pulido, Kurt Ostbahn and Krzysztof Dobrek . Tom Lord lists 27 recordings between 1993 and 2012 in the field of jazz.
In addition, Preinfalk also worked as a theater composer: for the Vienna Volkstheater he wrote the music for “Peer Gynt”, “Hiob” and “ You stay with me ” - each directed by Michael Sturminger . He also arranged Jewish songs with texts from poets murdered by Stalin in 1952 (“Moscow 52”, “Bukovina III”).
In 2011 Preinfalk was appointed professor for classical saxophone at the University of Art in Graz .
Prizes and awards
In 2001 Preinfalk was awarded the Hans Koller Prize as “Newcomer of the Year” in the jazz genre.
