Christoph Cech (born June 29, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian pianist , composer , conductor and university professor .

Initially, he mainly emerged in the field of creative jazz . Since 1999 he has headed the Institute for Jazz and Improvised Music (JIM) at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz .

Live and act

Cech's musical training began in 1967. Piano and percussion lessons were followed by studies of composition and jazz theory at the Vienna Conservatory (until 1983).

Since 1977 he has been active in numerous bands that are located in the spectrum of experimental jazz and presented a first album with Paganini's children . From 1988 he recorded six records with the big band Nouvelle Cuisine . He was also active in the trio moon cars , in Camerata Obscura and in a duo with Bertl Mütter . With Gerald Preinfalk and Per Mathisen he explored the music of Jimmy Giuffres in Giuffre Zone . In 1996 he was co-founder, director and conductor of the Janus Ensemble , which is active in the field of contemporary music , and performed with Agnes Heginger and Peter Herbert . Since 2013 he has performed the large-format The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update by Michael Mantler several times with various ensembles . On March 29, 2019, Cech organized a memorial concert with various musicians for his deceased colleague Wolfgang R. Kubizek , which was recorded and broadcast by Ö1 .

In addition to compositions for jazz ensembles, including around 100 pieces for big band, Cech also wrote the chamber opera Die Befreiung des Modulors , which premiered in 1988 at the Schwerin State Theater . His Piano Concerto No. 1 was written in 1993. In 1996 his opera From All Blossoms Bitternis was performed at the Vienna Chamber Opera and in 2005 his opera Orfeo was performed at the Neue Oper Vienna . He composed chamber music , for example for the Ensemble Die Reihe , the Janus Ensemble and the Trio di Clarone .

Since 1999, Cech has been director of the Institute for Jazz and Improvised Music at Bruckner University. In 2004 he qualified as a university professor in jazz composition. In addition to composition and teaching, he was musical director of the Grabenfest of the Austrian Civil Service Insurance for almost a decade .

Prizes and awards

In 1988, Cech received a working grant from the City of Vienna, was awarded first prize in the composition competition of the Vienna Conservatory in 1992, and in 1994 he was awarded the Leibnitz Art Prize for Big Band Composition. After receiving the Austro Mechana Publicity Prize in 1997, he received the Hans Koller Prize for the best jazz CD of the year in 1998 with Nouvelle Cuisine . In 2003 he won first prize in the composition competition of the city of Ternitz and the Austrian composers' association . In 2013 he received the Appreciation Prize for Music of the State of Lower Austria , and in 2016 the Austrian Art Prize for Music .
