During this time (1977–1981) he worked with various jazz groups as a composer, arranger and pianist. At the IEM in Graz he began to deal with electronic music and computer technology . 1984–89 he worked as a lecturer at the State Conservatory in Graz, but continued to study with Georg Friedrich Haas and Gösta Neuwirth . In 1987 he founded the composers' association “die other saite” together with G. Present and JM Willnauer. Together with Winfried Ritsch he developed the software CADMUS in C ++ (development environment for computer-aided composition). In 1989 he began teaching at the Graz University of Music (now KUG). Style and artistic evaluation

Lang's music draws its inspiration from the most varied of genres: European avant-garde of the 20th century, historical European art music, jazz , free jazz , rock , punk , techno , EDM ( electronic dance music ), electronica , electronic music and computer-generated music. His works range from solo pieces and small chamber music ensembles through choral works to large ensemble pieces, orchestral and music theater works. Lang also composed music for theater, dance, film and sound installations.

Bernhard Lang gained notoriety through his preoccupation with the phenomenon of “repetition” in the work cycle “difference / repetition”, based on the philosophical work of Gilles Deleuzes , in which he illuminates and questions the reproductive and DJ culture. Socio-cultural and socio-critical questions (“Das Theater der Wiederholungen”, 2003) are touched on, as are problems inherent in making music and music culture (“I hate Mozart”, 2006). Another field of activity is the “recycling” of historical music, which Lang subjects to filtering and mutation processes using computer-generated processes as part of the Monadology work cycle .

In addition to the ensemble of classical European instruments, his instruments include their amplified and electrified counterparts (e.g. electric viola) as well as ensemble groups that are microtonally detuned. Lang uses analog and digital synthesizers, keyboards and rock instruments (electric guitar, electric bass, drum set), record players (as groundbreaking devices in reproduction culture), rappers, Arab singers, speakers and live electronics (mainly the self-programmed " Loop generator ").
