The Anton Bruckner Private University for Music, Drama and Dance ( Bruckner University ) is a private university in Linz . It is located in the Urfahr district north of the Danube.
history
The Bruckner University emerged from the Bruckner Conservatory of the State of Upper Austria . It was accredited as a private university by the Austrian Accreditation Council in February 2004 and reaccredited in 2009.
A music school was founded in Linz as early as 1799 by Franz Xaver Glöggl (1764–1839), the then director of the town music school and a friend of Mozart and Beethoven . Anton Bruckner , the namesake of today's university, was never director of the previous institution.
In 1896 500 students studied at the music school, under the then director August Göllerich and his successor Wilhelm Jerger . Under the direction of Robert Keldorfer , the Linz Musikverein School was renamed the Bruckner Conservatory in 1932 and was granted public rights in 1935 . In 1970 the facility moved from its established location in Waltherstrasse 24 to Urfahr on Wildbergstrasse in 1909 . From 1995 Reinhart von Gutzeit was director of the Bruckner Conservatory and, after its conversion to a private university, rector of the university from 2004. In the summer of 2006 von Gutzeit left the university and became rector of the Mozarteum Music University in Salzburg. From September 2007 Marianne Betz headed the private university. Ursula Brandstätter was elected as the new Rector in June 2012 and took up office on September 1, 2012.
On December 4, 2006 the decision was made to build a new university building on the site of the former Hagen Castle at the foot of the Pöstlingberg . In December 2008, the Linz architects 1 ZT GmbH won the architectural competition advertised for it, the groundbreaking for the new building took place on May 4, 2011. In November 2012, the roof was leveled, and at the end of August 2015 the building was completed. The new building was put into operation at the beginning of the 2015/2016 winter semester on October 1st. On November 27, 2015, the new university building was officially opened by Federal President Heinz Fischer .
The Bruckner Tower is being built on the former site .
