Franz Xaver Glöggl

Franz Xaver Glöggl (born February 21, 1764 in Linz ; † June 16, 1839 there ) was an Austrian music scholar and cathedral music director in Linz.

Life

At the age of eight, Glöggl came to the music seminar in Linz as a soprano. In 1784 his father sent him to Vienna to continue his musical studies. Here he also learned to play the violin .

In 1790, supported by patrons, he took over the stage as orchestra director at the Linz Theater . At the same time he also accepted the position of city music director. The occupation of church instrumental music was associated with this function. In 1795 he also took over the management of the court theater in Salzburg. In 1797 he was given the leading position as Linz Cathedral Kapellmeister. In 1798 he gave up the management of the theater in order to be able to devote himself entirely to music as cathedral music director. He opened a music and art shop next to this office.

In the autumn of 1812 Beethoven visited him , who composed his three equals for four trombones WoO 30 for Glöggl .

He had an extensive library on the theory and practice of music. A rich collection of musical instruments belonged to his estate.

In 1830, a celebration was held in Linz Cathedral to honor his 50 years of service.
