Marianne Betz

Marianne Betz (born November 3, 1959 in Wiesbaden ) is a German flautist and musicologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Wiesbaden in 1977, Betz first studied recorder and flute at the Karlsruhe University of Music ( Gerhard Braun ) and the Freiburg University of Music ( Nikolaus Delius ), then musicology, English, German, Slavic and Romance studies at the University of Freiburg (Hans-Heinrich Eggebrecht, Uwe Pörksen, Günter Schnitzler) and the University of Heidelberg (Ludwig Finscher). In 1987 she was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation . In 1991 she completed her studies with a doctorate.

From 1983 to 1993 she was a lecturer for recorder and transverse flute at the Freiburg University of Education. She also worked as a freelancer for various music publishers and for the Badische Zeitung . In October 1993 she was appointed professor of musicology at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theater in Leipzig .

From September 2007 to August 2012 Marianne Betz was rector of the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and from 2008 to 2012 she was chairwoman of the Austrian Conference of Private Universities (ÖPUK). Since September 2012 she has been part of the “Leaders in Science” personnel consultancy team at the German Association of Universities .

Since she succeeded in finding essential materials from the estate of the Boston composer George Whitefield Chadwick (1854–1931), she has devoted a large part of her musicological work to research questions on American music.

Betz is a member of various international organizations. She is the founder of the Transatlantic Relations working group at the Society for American Music (SAM) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Society for American Music . In 2002 she received a scholarship from the Sinfonia Foundation , in 2013 she was awarded the Adrienne Fried Block Fellowship , and in 2016 the Virgil Thomson Fellowship . She has a private education in classical and historical dance (Christine Bayle).
