from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harald "Harry" Neuwirth (born February 2, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz pianist and composer .

Live and act

Neuwirth comes from a musical family; the composer Gösta Neuwirth is his brother, the composer Olga Neuwirth his daughter. At the age of twelve he was already performing Mozart's piano concertos; he remained loyal to classical music until he was 18 years old, and then occupied himself with jazz and worked as a jazz pianist. He first studied law (up to the doctorate). He also studied classical piano at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Graz Conservatory.

Since it was founded in 1965, Neuwirth has taught at the Institute for Jazz at what was then the Graz Music Academy (now the Music University), where he was head of department from 1975 to 1983. He is considered the “architect” of Graz jazz education. In 1981 he was appointed full professor. He was a founding member of Erich Kleinschuster's sextet , directed his own ensembles and composed and arranged film and theater music.
