Michael Kahr

Michael Kahr (born February 15, 1975 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian jazz pianist , composer / arranger and musicologist .

Career

Kahr grew up in a musical family and first received lessons on the recorder and then learned to trumpet . Since 1985 he has received classical piano lessons. Between 1993 and 1998 he studied jazz trumpet at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz to graduate with a diploma. Since 1997 he has been studying jazz piano at the same university. After completing his undergraduate studies, he completed postgraduate studies with John Taylor and Bill Dobbins at the Cologne University of Music until 2001 and at Sydney University with Mike Nock and Bill Motzing from 2002 to 2004 .

Since 2000 he worked as a freelance musician. In 2005 he was resident at Betty Carter's Jazzahead in Washington DC. He had performances in Austria, Germany, England, France, Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Croatia, Hungary and Poland, Serbia, the USA, in China (Shanghai, Hangzhou), in Iran , in Australia and Africa (Senegal, Egypt). In 2010 he obtained his dissertation with the thesis Aspects of Context and Harmony in the Music of Clare Fischer at Sydney University. In 2011 he received the Morroe Berger - Benny Carter Jazz Research Award .

Since 2006 he has worked as a senior lecturer at the Institute for Jazz and since 2011 as a post-doc at the Institute for Jazz Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Since 2018 he has been Dean of the Faculty of Music and Head of Master’s Studies at the Jam Music Lab Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna . Further teaching assignments at the University of Vienna (Institute for Musicology, 2013, 2016/17), Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (2018, 2019) and Sydney University (2003/4). From 2011 to 2013 he worked as a postdoc in the FWF-PEEK research project Jazz & the City: Identity of a Capital of Jazz (AR 86 G21). Kahr has been a board member of the International Society for Jazz Research and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal for Jazz Education in Research and Practice since 2018. His monograph Jazz & the City. Jazz in Graz from 1965 to 2015 (Graz: Leykam 2016) was awarded the Erzherzog-Johann-Forschungspreis 2018.

He gave concerts with Ed Thigpen , Gary Foster , Dusko Goykovich , Bobby Shew , Michael Abene , Karlheinz Miklin , Jay Clayton , Winard Harper , Mark Murphy , Wayne Darling , Árni Egilsson , Dick Oatts , John Riley , Jazz Big Band Graz , Big Band Süd, Rondo Vienna, Richard Oesterreicher , Ines Dominik-Reiger , Nadine Beiler, Hansi Lang , Frank Hoffmann and Lisbeth Bischoff.

Appearances took place at the Jazzfestival Wiesen (Austria), Musikforum Viktring (Austria), Jazzfestival Leibnitz (Austria), Jazzfestival St. Louis (Senegal), Fete de la Musique (Paris), International Fajr Festival (Tehran), at Austrian cultural forums (Tehran, Washington DC and Zagreb) as well as in concert halls and jazz clubs such as Porgy & Bess (Vienna), Orpheum (Graz), UMO Jazz Club (Helsinki), Basement (Sydney), Kennedy Center (Washington DC), JZ Club (Shanghai and Hangzhou), Roudaki Hall (Tehran Opera House), Cadogan Hall (London), Centennial Center (Vancouver).
