Samuel Jakob Bendt Mathias Moses Knudsen (born April 30, 1929 in Kangersuatsiaq ) is a Greenlandic artist , writer and teacher .

Life

Samuel Knudsen is the son of the hunter Peter Elias Rasmus Knudsen (1901–?) And his wife Lea Karoline Elisabeth Christiansen (1908–?). On March 4, 1950, he married Amalie Johanne Sofie Marie Immanuelsen (1929–?), The daughter of Knud Martin Timotheus Immanuelsen (1890–?) And Anine Johanne Nielsen (1891–?).

As usual, Samuel was raised a hunter. He pursued this profession for the first 30 years of his life. However, when he froze all the fingers on his left hand, he could no longer hunt and became an assistant teacher, which he remained until 1989. He noticed that the children had problems learning to write because there was nothing the children could read. So Samuel Knudsen started writing children's books in Greenlandic. Without having had any artistic training, he finally began to paint. His works of art reflect the Greenlandic myths and legends and are often made as linocuts . In 1987 he created the logo of the Upernavik municipality in the town hall and in 1991 the chain of mayors . He exhibited in Skanderborg in 1990 and in Upernavik in 1991 .

On June 7, 1999, he received the Nersornaat in silver.
