ICOON for refugees book

ICOON for refugees is a free Bildwörterbuch including an Android - app , which for Refugees has been designed and their helpers. 1,200 symbols, pictograms and photos should help with initial communication. By pointing a finger at the corresponding picture, needs can be communicated across language barriers. The aid project of the Berlin publisher AMBERPRESS was implemented in November 2015 with the help of a crowdfunding campaign on the Startnext platform .

The first edition of 30,000 books was given away to refugees and their helpers in December 2015. The second edition of 20,000 books followed in February 2016. The third edition of 15,000 was printed in summer 2016. The total print run is 65,000.

The Berlin publishing house AMBERPRESS, consisting of the founder, designer and author Gosia Warrink, the designer Katja Koeberlin and the art historian Monika Pfau, has been publishing the picture dictionary series ICOON since 2007. This is mainly used by travelers in areas where they do not speak the local language. But the picture dictionary is also used for stroke patients or the deaf. In the summer of 2015 the publisher u. a. Due to a contribution on rbb television, requests from the German Red Cross and other aid initiatives for free ICOON picture dictionaries. The associations and initiatives complained about massive language barriers and the lack of translators at the border crossings and in the emergency shelters.

Project

Between July and September 2015, the publisher donated around 2,000 ICOON books. In order to be able to provide quick communication assistance, a “First Communication Help”, a DIN A4 leaflet with 300 symbols and two world maps, was designed in September 2015, which the publisher makes available for download free of charge. Based on the previous ICOON picture dictionaries, a book that has been adapted in terms of content and is cheaper to produce was created: ICOON for refugees. It is a non-commercial and cooperative aid project. In addition, a free Android app ICOON for refugees was developed. The publishing house was advised on the content of this project by the German Red Cross and refugee helpers.

Crowdfunding campaign

The campaign's funding target was 10,000 euros for 10,000 books and was exceeded by far with the final income of 23,023 euros. The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband supported the awareness of the campaign by printing 50,000 “First Communication Help” leaflets in mid-October 2015. Thanks to the press articles in the Bonner Generalanzeiger and the taz, the support of the German Red Cross Offenbach e. V. and the Goethe-Institut as well as the financial support of 362 private individuals, 30,000 books were delivered to the publisher in December 2015. After the crowdfunding campaign was over, more supporters were found who wanted to finance the printing of new books. The publisher set up the possibility to support the project financially with 20 euros to finance further editions. The second edition of 20,000 books was printed in mid-February 2016, and 15,000 books were printed in mid-July 2016. The total print run is 65,000 books in eight months (as of July 2016).

Follow-up projects

AMBERPRESS designed a signage system for the clothing store in the emergency accommodation at Cologne Airport as well as posters for orientation in the tents free of charge. In cooperation with the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband, a German learning aid poster in A1 format was created that can be downloaded from the Internet. It contains 180 symbols with German titles that help with the first language acquisition.

With the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , a poster was created in 2016 to enable refugee children of all nationalities from pre-school age to learn the German language in a playful way.
