After three years as a member of the ensemble, she was kicked out by her colleagues by resolution of the ensemble: “You feel too comfortable as a chick in the nest. [...] You have to go out into the country and get to know the shit! "

At the suggestion of the then young, later director Christoph Marthaler , whom Bill got to know as a street musician in Zurich, she then went to Jacques Lecoq's theater school in Paris : “Lecoq freed me and took my inhibitions away.” There she sat down with me her comedic talent apart.

When she returned to Zurich, she wanted to tour the country with a clown colleague and a van . At this time, Hans Gratzer was also a guest in Zurich with his "Flittertheater", which Bill got to know there as well as his "troop member" Michael Schottenberg , her future husband:

“I thought to myself: Actually, that's exactly what I want to do! I want to go with you! So I went to the Gratzer with the clown after the performance to tell him that. He saw it and actually took both of us on tour right away. That's how I got to know the Schottenberg, and when the Gratzer wanted to take me to Vienna, I had nothing against it. "

Acting career in Austria

Bill was then part of the first ensemble of the Wiener Schauspielhaus when it was founded in 1978 . The founder Gratzer had scheduled five premieres in a row, with the house still having to be finished by the ensemble after the adaptation to theater: “We chopped like crazy - and cleaned the houses at the back , while the audience in the front with the champagne glasses The Bill became more widely known in 1982 with a play about the life of Édith Piaf , played and sung at the Schauspielhaus , for which she was awarded the Kainz Medal of the City of Vienna. Music career

The starting point of her musical career were Bill's appearances on the Piaf:

“Others write their longings and desperations in diaries as adolescents, for me it was songs. But they should remain my secret for a long time. When I was allowed to play and sing this piece about Edith Piaf in the Schauspielhaus in 1982, this old woman gave me incredible courage. 'When I sing, that's me,' she said, and I thought that was a good idea. The record companies hit my door back then! I was supposed to sing Piaf songs, however, and I found that absurd - because the original existed. So I got my own songs out of the drawer. "

Christian Kolonovits as their producer and Maria Bill then sifted through their existing songs and sorted them out. Although the two of them added some from the sorted songs the next day, there were too few for a (first) long-playing record, whereupon Kolonovits said that Bill had to write something more. As a “present of the moment”, the future hit “I mecht landen” happened to her on another day .

With the 1983 debut album (LP) Maria Bill , she managed to reach the top of the charts the following year . The title I mecht landen contained on it is considered a successful representative of Austropop . In September 2012 her album from 1983, which had been out of print for a long time, was re-released under the title Anniversary Edition and with her songs until 1987 on a double CD. The “Kurzzeit-Austropop-Star” ( Falter ) went on a farewell tour with a large part of these songs , beginning on October 5th in the Wiener Konzerthaus .

In addition to the interpretation of her own songs, her musical programs with chansons by Édith Piaf and Jacques Brel are among her successes. Again and again she continues to sing under the titles Maria Bill sings Edith Piaf, Maria Bill sings Jacques Brel, and Maria Bill sings on various stages in German-speaking countries.

In October 2014 - in Michael Schottenberg's farewell season - Maria Bill was on the stage of the Volkstheater with songs by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht .
