In the 2003/04 season he directed the Vienna Theater in der Josefstadt . There it was controversial from the start. Finally, the planned takeover of the management of the Bad Hersfeld Festival in 2006 by Gratzer was used as an opportunity to terminate his contract after only one year. Because of his cancer, Elke Hesse became director of the festival. The 2005/06 season schedule was designed in close collaboration with Gratzer.

Shortly before his death on January 19, 2005, Hans Gratzer received the Vienna Nestroy Theater Prize in November 2004 for his life's work.
