Ulrich Drechsler (2018)

Ulrich Drechsler (born July 23, 1969 in Reutlingen ) is a German jazz musician ( clarinets , saxophone and composition).

Live and act

Drechsler received his first clarinet lessons at the age of 9 and played in a local brass band before studying saxophone at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz between 1992 and 1998 .

After moving from Graz to Vienna , he founded the band Café Drechsler together with bassist Oliver Steger and drummer Alex Deutsch in 2000 , with which he quickly became known internationally to a larger audience. The band quickly established itself as one of the most successful Austrian jazz ensembles and in 2002 released their debut album Café Drechsler (Universal Music).

During this time Drechsler began to dedicate himself more to the clarinet, especially the bass clarinet and the basset horn , which became his main instruments in the following years. Influenced by different genres such as Scandinavian folklore, contemporary Eastern European composers, trip-hop and Sufi music , he developed a completely independent musical expression in the years that followed.

In 2006 Drechsler released his first album, Humans & Places, under his own name, on which he collaborated with the Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen , among others . Since then he has regularly released albums in different line-ups under his own name. These include the Ulrich Drechsler Cello Quartet, his duo with the Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia or his collaboration with the Iranian Sufi singer Sahar Lotfi and her husband, the Kamantsche virtuoso Samer Habibi. He also composes and produces film music for documentaries and feature films.

Drechsler combines his influences from art music and folk music into slightly catchy, minimalist music. He attaches central importance to the individual tone and its sound.
