life and career

Born in Oslo in 1970, Gustavsen is one of the most active and influential musicians in his home country's jazz scene in recent years. Outside Norway, he first became known to a wider audience primarily through his work with Silje Nergaard .

In addition, he has been playing with bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad in the Tord Gustavsen Trio named after him since the late 1990s . The widely acclaimed debut album Changing Places was released in 2003 on ECM. The Ground followed two years later , the first instrumental jazz album to climb to number one in the Norwegian charts and also to land in the top 10 of the Billboard Top Jazz Albums in the USA . In April 2007 the album Being There was released . According to Gustavsen, it marks the end of a trilogy.

Gustavsen has been working under the name Tord Gustavsen Ensemble since 2008 with flexible line-ups as a duo, trio or quartet. The regular cast includes Tore Brunborg (saxophone), Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Jarle Vespestad (drums). Depending on the arrangement, it is extended by Kristin Asbjørnsen (vocals), Cecilie Jørstad (readings) and Rune Arnesen (drums). The ensemble emerged from a commissioned work for the Vossajazz Festival 2008. The album The Well was created in 2012 with the Tord Gustavsen Quartet , which consists of Gustavsen, Tore Brunborg, Jarle Vespestad and Mats Eilertsen .
