Simin Tander (born October 19, 1980 in Cologne ) is a German jazz musician (vocals, composition).

Live and act

Tander is the daughter of an Afghan journalist and a German teacher. Her father died when she was a young child. She grew up in Cologne. Her older sister Mina Tander is an actress. When Simin Tander graduated from high school, she was very close to a record deal as a pop singer. She turned this down. During her vocal training with an opera singer, she realized that her heart beats more for vocal improvisation than for classical music. She took piano lessons and formed her first band. From 2002 she studied jazz singing at the ArtEZ Conservatory in the Netherlands. There she graduated in 2008 with a Master of Music. In the following years she played in the Netherlands with trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and with Bo van de Graafs I Compani (she was involved in the albums Fellini , Garbo and Extended 2013 ). In Germany she was heard on the soundtracks of Tatort and two episodes of the ZDF film Der Kriminalist .

She leads her quartet, which includes Jeroen van Vliet (winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2014), Etienne Nillesen and Cord Heineking. With them she has released two albums and on international stages such as the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Bohemia Jazz Festival (Czech Republic), the Catania Jazz Festival (Italy), the Madrid Jazz Festival (Spain), the OCT LOFT Festival (China) , the Hong Kong Jazz Festival or the Jarasum Jazz Festival (South Korea). Simin was also invited several times by the UN Women Committee Germany for international events and performed the UN women song One Woman during the Beijing 20 conference in Berlin in June 2015 .

Since 2014 she has been working with two Norwegians, the pianist Tord Gustavsen and the drummer Jarle Vespestad , with whom she recorded the album What Was Said in 2015 . She has also appeared in other projects, such as the Eurasians Unity ensemble, which was awarded Ruth in 2015 at the TFF Rudolstadt, under the direction of Caroline Thon, or in Heiner Schmitz ' Sins & Blessings . Since 2012 she has also been a lecturer for jazz singing at the Institute for Music Osnabrück.
