Besteheid is the largest and oldest district of the large district town Wertheim in the Main-Tauber district , in the north of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

geography

The designated water protection area Besteheid with the WSG no. 128143 covers a protected area of 278.7 hectares.

history

The exact age of the place on the Mainaue is not documented, presumably there was already a prehistoric settlement here, as archaeological finds suggest. Bestheid was first mentioned in a document on July 2, 1284 in a document from Count Rudolf II of Wertheim. The landlord hereby certifies the sale of income from the village of "Bestinheide" to three sisters, daughters of the knight Heinrich Klinkhart, who belonged to the count's castle team. Two villagers are mentioned in the document, a farmer Walther and a widow Jutta, who are therefore the oldest known Besteheider. It is interesting that these villagers do not yet have a family name , in contrast to other people named in the document, who presumably came from the city of Wertheim.

As early as 1909, the Besteheider voted for the connection to the city of Wertheim, on January 1, 1913 the village, which was located directly on the Wertheim city limits, was officially incorporated. At that time, Besteheid had 270 inhabitants.

After the Second World War, glassmakers who emigrated from Thuringia settled here and built a glassworks, from which the name of the station "Wertheim-Glashütte" was derived, which was often used synonymously for "Besteheid". Today, the Besteheider industrial area is, among other things, the seat of an important glass producing and glass processing industry with a wide range of products, from fiber optics to thermometers and measuring devices to high-tech laboratory devices for science and technology, which are exported worldwide.

After 1945, many expellees from Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia were housed in emergency quarters in Wertheim. In 1951, the construction of the "glassworks settlement" began for them in the vicinity of the new glass industry in Besteheid. In February / March 1952 approx. 1,400 new residents were able to move in here. Since it was a "federal settlement", this name was also used as a designation for the place of residence. In the period that followed, the district grew rapidly and building activity began, also to provide housing for the increasing number of employees.

religion

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Elisabeth was built in 1953 and consecrated on October 9th. The Protestant Martin Luther Church with the glass blower window by Charles Crodel was consecrated in 1957.

In 2018, a grave field for Muslims is to be built in the Besteheider forest cemetery, as decided unanimously in the Wertheim municipal council on July 24, 2017. Wertheim is the first town in the Main-Tauber district to allow burials according to the Muslim rite .

Economy and Infrastructure

Besteheid is located in a loop of the Main north of Wertheim.

Established businesses

Around 3,500 people live in the district today, and the economy also grew strongly. Many important companies and several of the world market leaders based in Wertheim have their headquarters in Besteheid.

Besteheid has a good infrastructure with supermarkets, specialist shops and a comprehensive range of services, plus day-care centers, a primary school, secondary school and a vocational school center, sports facilities and clubs. There is a large heated outdoor pool and a well-known campsite right on the banks of the Main. The Main Harbor in Wertheim is also in the immediate vicinity .

traffic

Since 1912, Besteheid has been connected to the Miltenberg West – Wertheim railway line, which crosses the Main on the Hasloch railway bridge near Besteheid, through the former train station and today's Wertheim-Besteheid stop (Wertheim Glashütte until 2008) . In the neighboring Wertheim train station there is a connection to the Lauda – Wertheim railway line .

In 1950, at the same time as several industrial companies emerged, an industrial trunk line was built in Besteheid. It branched off to the right near the level crossing to the Besteheider Winterhafen at kilometer 30.4 from the Wertheim-Hasloch railway line. The main track ended after about 300 meters in the Schuller premises; there was a loading and bypassing track. The total length of the industrial track was around 900 meters. The industrial track was last used in 2002. In June 2007 the connecting switch to the main industrial track was removed, as were the tracks in the Mainmühle area.

From the Wertheim-Besteheid stop in the direction of Hasloch, after 400 meters, the approximately two-kilometer-long harbor track branches off to the left (at 29.3 km) to the Wertheim Main Harbor in Besteheid. It was built with the Mainhafen in 1967. The line initially runs on a single track, two tracks have been laid in the port area with the large portal crane. After 300 meters, two loading tracks branch off to the left back from the harbor track into a storage area of the Schuller company.

There are stops of the Wertheim city bus service in the district. Besteheid can be reached via the L 2310 ( Besteheider Landstrasse ) and the Besteheider Höhenweg .
