history
The Wertheim train station was opened in 1868 and initially only enabled a connection up the Tauber. In addition to a water station, he had two water cranes. A two-tier locomotive shed as well as a service apartment and a building for the switchman completed the station buildings. With the opening of the Main Bridge on October 1, 1881, the connection to Lohr via Kreuzwertheim was added, making the Wertheim train station a dead end for two lines. The Wertheim station thus served as a changing station for the Royal Bavarian State Railways .
A provisional station building built in 1868 was used until 1968 and consisted of parts of the old Mannheim train station . In 1888, the railway facilities were extended from the locomotive depot to the winter harbor. A lifting crane with a lifting capacity of eight tons was located on the quay. The station master was now also in command of the Tauberhafen. In 1909 the Lohrer and Lauda routes were merged in the city area and the embankment was supplemented with retaining walls on both sides.
In 1912 the Miltenberg route was added as the third route . This made Wertheim a through station. This route crosses the Main at Wertheim-Besteheid on the Hasloch railway bridge. Construction of the truss bridge began in 1910 and the masonry work was completed in 1911. The grand opening of the bridge took place on September 30, 1912 at the same time as the Michaelmas Mass. The former stop in the Grünenwörth district is no longer served today.
Towards the end of the Second World War, the bridge was blown up in the spring of 1945 by German soldiers using aerial bombs. From May 1945 until the Main Bridge was rebuilt, the station had a ferry across the Main. In 1947/48 the Main Bridge was rebuilt by the Reichsbahn. The pedestrian walkway was also reattached. The municipality of Hasloch also had to contribute financially to this measure.
In 1957 a signal box was built in the station as a tower between the main tracks. In 1969 the station building was demolished. A wooden barrack was erected before the new reception building was put into operation. In 1971 the present reception building was completed and put into operation.
Passenger traffic between Lohr and Wertheim ceased on May 30, 1976. On May 26, 1979, the Lohr line was shut down and then dismantled. Only a few remains of it have survived today. Wertheim station remained independent with its own railway maintenance office until 1984. Then there were conversions and additions. In 1988, freight traffic in Wertheim was abandoned and general cargo handling was relocated to Heilbronn. The wagonload traffic came to Lauda station for business purposes. In 2003 the ticket office was closed. From 2009 to 2010, the station building was renovated and again received a ticket sales point. Track systems and platforms were rebuilt between 2010 and 2012 and the signal box was shut down and demolished in 2011. Since then, the station has been remote-controlled from the Miltenberg central signal box. the house platform, track 1, has been a head track since then, and between tracks 2 and 3 there is a central platform, which is reached via a level access.
