Swell:

The Miltenberg West – Wertheim line is a branch line in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . It branches in Miltenberg from the railway line Aschaffenburg-Miltenberg and leads through the Maintal to Wertheim . Passenger traffic on the route is operated by the Westfrankenbahn as part of the Aschaffenburg – Wertheim connection, which it calls the Maintalbahn .

history

Bridge over the Main in Miltenberg (April 2009)
Route in Miltenberg

Miltenberg was connected to the railway network by the Royal Bavarian State Railways in 1876 with the Aschaffenburg – Miltenberg main line. For this purpose, a terminal station was built on the western edge of Miltenberg's old town , which was later named Miltenberg Hbf . This is where the route to Seckach began earlier .

The line to Wertheim branches north of the Miltenberg station from the line from Aschaffenburg, for which a bridge had to be built over the Main. The first section to Stadtprozelten was put into operation on May 21, 1906. The entire line to Wertheim was opened on October 1, 1912. The last section of 3.85 kilometers in length was then owned by the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways . Wertheim had been connected with Lauda since 1868 and with Lohr am Main since 1881 . During this time, the through station Miltenberg Nord was built on the right bank of the Main ; the station on the route from Aschaffenburg cannot be reached directly from Wertheim.

Between the 1950s and the 1970s, there were continuous express train connections in Miltenberg Nord on the route Bodensee - Crailsheim - Aschaffenburg - Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof .

Miltenberg main station was closed to tourist traffic in the summer of 1977 and from then on only served goods traffic. Since then, passenger trains have only stopped at the former Miltenberg Nord station, which has been called Miltenberg since then . Since then, passenger trains have also been running from Seckach to the former North Station.

Accidents

On Thursday, June 9, 2005 , a train accident occurred at a level crossing in Besteheid , a district of Wertheim. A truck with a styrofoam-loaded trailer stopped at the automated level crossing at 12:30 p.m. to maneuver there. Shortly thereafter, Regional Express  4928 came from Aschaffenburg in the direction of Crailsheim. As a result of the collision, the trailer and part of the train caught fire. Nobody was injured because the driver was able to save himself and the passengers to the rear of the train. According to estimates, the property damage amounted to around one million euros.

Current situation

Passenger traffic on the route is operated by the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Westfrankenbahn ; the route was often affected by intentions to shut down, but these were not implemented. Due to the cycle tourism in the Main and Taubertal valleys, the route is enjoying greater popularity again and has been extensively renewed in recent years. The Regional Express trains run every two hours as the Main-Tauber Express continuously from Aschaffenburg via Miltenberg and Wertheim to Crailsheim. You are solely with diesel railcars of the 642 series down.

Germany clock

In the destination timetable of the Deutschland-Takt it is planned to connect the regional express line to Mosbach via Seckach instead of to Aschaffenburg. In Miltenberg, there is a hub with the possibility of changing between the regional express trains arriving from three directions almost simultaneously.
