The Miltenberg Station (formerly Miltenberg North ) is a railway station in the Bavarian district town of Miltenberg . Today it has three platform tracks and is served by around 60 trains of the Westfrankenbahn , a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn , every day. From 1906 it was initially a stopping point and replaced the Miltenberg Hbf terminus in 1977 after an expansion .

history

prehistory

The first train station in Miltenberg, later called Miltenberg Hbf, was opened on November 12, 1876 with the line from Aschaffenburg Hauptbahnhof as the terminus on the banks of the Main , on the edge of the old town. The Bavarian government had the station built there because it was not interested in a continuation of the railway line to Wertheim in Baden at the time.

The railway line to Wertheim was built and opened from 1906 to 1912. Their introduction into the existing Miltenberg train station could not take place in the direction of Aschaffenburg, as the densely built-up old town was disturbing. Even for a “normal” introduction of the line to the terminus at Miltenberg Hauptbahnhof , there was not enough space for the curved track, as the Main had to be crossed beforehand. For trains from Wertheim to Aschaffenburg, quite a complex operation was required: They first stopped in Miltenberg Nord , then drove on the route in the direction of Aschaffenburg and, after a service stop at the Miltenberg West junction, returned to Miltenberg Hbf, the terminus remained. Then they drove on to Aschaffenburg after another change of direction .

In the 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn examined various plans to make operations less cumbersome. A small variant envisaged the retention of the terminus station and an expansion of the Miltenberg Nord station for through trains between Aschaffenburg and Wertheim, a comprehensive variant the complete relocation of operations to the north station.

In the 1970s a combination of both alternatives was realized and in 1973 a new goods hall was completed. The construction of passenger transport systems did not begin until 1975. From May 22, 1977, all passenger trains only served Mildenberg Nord, it was named Miltenberg Station . The existing facilities in Mildenberg Hbf were used for freight traffic. Internally, the operating site was henceforth run as Miltenberg Gbf ("Miltenberg Güterbahnhof").
