The Lauda – Wertheim line is a main line in Baden-Württemberg . It branches off the Mosbach-Neckarelz-Würzburg-Heidingsfeld railway in Lauda and leads to Wertheim . As part of the Crailsheim – Wertheim connection known as the Taubertalbahn , the route follows the Tauber for its entire length .

history

Upon completion of ground surveys in 1858 and the Law Decree of August 11, 1863 In 1864, the survey work began for the route, construction began in October 1866. The first section of the opened Grand Ducal Baden State Railways on 10 October 1867 the section Lauda- Hochhausen , completion to Wertheim followed on October 15, 1868. On November 1, 1869 the line was also opened for freight traffic.

After the rail reform in 1994, the line was threatened several times by Deutsche Bahn AG's closure plans, but was ultimately incorporated into the DB regional network Westfrankenbahn on January 1, 2006 , which functions both as a railway infrastructure company and as a railway company .

Due to damage to a bridge in Tauberbischofsheim by a motor vehicle, the route category was temporarily reduced to A in this area at the beginning of December 2017 and a temporary speed limit was set up in this area with a maximum speed of 50 km / h. The Reicholzheim tunnel has also been renovated since October 2018.

In 2018, the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Hochhausen – Wertheim section and thus the entire route was celebrated with exhibitions, lectures by railway historians and special trips.

Current situation

passenger traffic

In rail transport are since the network 11 Commissioning exclusively in December 2019 railcars of the 642 series used. They operate the route alternately as a regional express (RE 87) and regional train (RB 85a), with all intermediate stations except the Tauberbischofsheim station being demand stops .

Freight transport

For goods traffic on the route, a large stonemasonry in Gamburg and the Mainhafen Wertheim are served with block trains. In addition, freight trains with excess loading gauge occasionally ran along the route between Nuremberg and Aschaffenburg in order to bypass the bottleneck of the then Schwarzkopf tunnel on the Main-Spessart Railway between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg.

Lauda railway junction

Lauda

The Lauda train station is located at Bahnhofstrasse 23 in Lauda-Königshofen. In its early days, it had a temporary station building completed on March 1, 1866, and when the Odenwaldbahn opened on November 1, 1866, it initially existed as a through station. When the first section of the Wertheim line to Hochhausen started operating on October 10, 1867, Lauda became a railway junction. The current building could only be put into operation in 1872.

Distelhausen stop

Distelhausen

The Distelhausen stop is on the Taubertal Cycle Path or on Wolfgangstrasse ( ) in Distelhausen . The station was built in 1867. During the construction of the A 81 autobahn with the nearby Tauberbischofsheim junction and the nearby Taubertal Bridge , an additional ceiling construction station was built north of the train station in the 1970s for a period of around two years .

Dittigheim stop with level crossing

Dittigheim

The Dittigheim stop is located on Frombergstraße ( ) in Dittigheim . There used to be a manned barrier post there. In 1976 the level crossing received an automatic control. It was initially monitored by a railroad attendant as a remote barrier. The former stationer's house went into private ownership. In 1996, the barrier guard's office building from 1954 was demolished and replaced by a bus shelter. In 2004, the last track work at the stop and level crossing took place. In 2018 a nearby bridge was replaced by a steel structure.

The Tauberbischofsheim train station is located at Bahnhofstrasse 17 ( ) in Tauberbischofsheim . The building was constructed between 1866 and 1868. A temporary building was therefore erected for the opening of the railway line in 1867. Between 1914 and 1968, a railway line to Königheim branched off at Tauberbischofsheim . In 1977 the Tauberbischofsheim station became a branch of the Lauda station.

Tauberbischofsheim North

Tauberbischofsheim Nord is an alternate connection point Am Fronbrunnen ( ) in Tauberbischofsheim, which was used as a Bundeswehr loading point with a head ramp. Trains could be locked in here for a long time by means of block protection for loading and unloading. For this purpose, the route between Hochhausen and Tauberbischofsheim, and later between Gamburg and Tauberbischofsheim, had to be closed. After locking, the blockage was lifted and the trains had free travel again on the track. The last loading and unloading of tanks in the alternative junction took place on May 7, 2013.

The station Hochhausen is located at the Railway 6 ( ) in high Hausen . The station was built in 1869. For the opening of the first section from Lauda to Hochhausen, a temporary station building was therefore built in 1867. Since Hochhausen was temporarily the terminus of the line at that time, a locomotive shed, two wagon sheds and a water tower were built there. In 1977 the station was administratively transferred to Lauda station.

Niklashausen

The Niklashausen stop is on the Taubertal Cycle Path or on Schulstrasse 30 ( ) in Niklashausen . It was built in 1954 and has a shelter and stairs to the platform. Extensive renovation work was carried out in November and December 2017. A new bus shelter with an integrated ticket machine, a new platform raised to 55 cm, barrier-free access, an information board and a loudspeaker were built.

Gamburg train station is located at Bahnhofstraße 13 ( ) in Gamburg . The station, built in 1867, is a crossing station with a siding up to the workshop of an industrial company. A special feature in operation and construction is the Gamburger tunnel located within the train station in the direction of Wertheim and the switch located there, which is therefore always free of ice even in winter. The Gamburg railway bridge follows in the direction of Niklashausen .

Bronnbach Monastery

The reception building of the former Bronnbach (Tauber) train station, which today is the Bronnbach monastery stop, is located on a farm road ( ) that branches off from the L 509 near the hamlet of Bronnbach . Bronnbach station was completed in 1868. The main features of the station building have been preserved to this day. It stands across the railway line and as a special feature has two waiting rooms, one of the 1st class and one of the 2nd class. When the station went into operation, there were two level crossings in the double-track station area. The level crossing at the Tauberbrücke still exists today and is now automated. The Bronnbach railway bridge follows in the direction of Gamburg .

Reicholzheim stop

Reicholzheim

The reception building of the former train station and today's Reicholzheim stop is on the street Zum Ottersberg ( ) in Reicholzheim . The main features of the historic station building erected in 1868 have been preserved to this day. On December 31, 1987, the station ended and the staff was withdrawn. On January 18, 1988, the level crossing was converted to a fully automatic control.

Wertheim train station

Wertheim

Wertheim train station is located at Bahnhofstrasse 8 ( ) in Wertheim . The station was opened in 1868 and initially only enabled a connection up the Tauber. On October 1, 1881, the railway to Lohr was joined by a connection via Kreuzwertheim, making the Wertheim station a dead end for two lines. In 1912 the Miltenberg West – Wertheim railway was added as the third line . The Lohr route was shut down from the direction of Wertheim. The Wertheim-Lauda and Miltenberg West-Wertheim railway lines still exist today.
