history

From the construction of the sections to the turn of the millennium

The planning for the Taubertal Railway began after the conclusion of a Baden-Württemberg state treaty on March 31, 1864 and a Württemberg law enacted on August 13, 1865.

The Königshofen - Lauda section was opened in 1866 as part of the connection from Osterburken to Würzburg.

Construction of the Lauda – Wertheim section began in October 1866, and the Crailsheim– Mergentheim section began in August 1868 . The first section was Lauda– Hochhausen in 1867 , the Hochhausen – Wertheim section followed the following year. On October 23, 1869, Württemberg and Baden finally put their respective sections into operation together. The Württemberg section led from Crailsheim to the then state border at Mergentheim and the Baden section from there to Königshofen. On that day, the route could be used continuously for the first time.

Until the Orthographic Conference of 1901 , the route was still written Tauberthalbahn or Tauberthal-Bahn .

Since the 1950s, so-called hedge cable trains have also run on the Taubertal Railway , which connected Frankfurt with Ulm until around 2005 . Since then, the route to Aschaffenburg – Crailsheim has been shortened.

The Taubertal Railway in the 21st century

After the turn of the millennium, Deutsche Bahn carried out modernizations on various sections. On January 1, 2006, the line, with the exception of the Königshofen – Lauda section, was incorporated into the DB regional network Westfrankenbahn , which operates both as a railway infrastructure company and as a local railway company in order to make the necessary contacts and decisions with those responsible locally and nationwide To be able to offer decision-makers from a single source.

Until December 9, 2006, the Tauberbahn had the table number 788 in the timetable. Since then it has had the number 782.

In 2018 the 150th anniversary of the Tauberbahn was celebrated on various sections of the route, including exhibitions of historical images and documents, lectures by railway historians and special trips.

Cycle tourism

Bicycles at the Distelhausen stop

The route serves as a means of transport for bicycle tourism along large parts of the Taubertal Cycle Path . Every second Sunday in August there is a car-free Sunday in the Taubertal, which changes annually between the southern and northern Taubertal. On this day the Taubertalstraße is closed to car traffic. In addition to the scheduled operation, there will then be repeater trains with increased bicycle transport capacity .
