history

prehistory

To the south of Königshofen lies the ceramics burial ground Wöllerspfad .

Middle Ages and early modern times

In 1415 the Königshöfer fair was first mentioned in a document as a one-day Matthäus market . In 1492 Königshofen was granted market privilege by Emperor Friedrich III .

During the Peasants' War on June 2, 1525, a battle between the united Neckartaler and Odenwalder clusters and the knighthood under Georg Truchsess von Waldburg-Zeil took place on the Turmberg near Königshofen , in which several thousand peasants were killed. Before the battle, Götz von Berlichen and Count von Wertheim left the peasantry. The Count of Wertheim switched to the federal government. When the Bundish cavalry stormed the flanks of the peasant positions, the meeting was already decided, as the few guns of the peasants were operated by ignorant people. About 8,000 farmers were killed in the slaughter. The princes themselves took part in the persecution of the fleeing peasants. It would seem funny to you, like a pig-chase, observed a contemporary observer. Only a few hundred farmers managed to escape. On the evening of the same day Truchseß von Waldburg-Zeil , the leader of the federal army, had four peasants executed in Königshofen. In the battle, all 300 citizens of Königshofen were killed except for 15. That was only the beginning of a terrible criminal court of the princes.

Modern times

As part of the secularization due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Königshofen came to the Principality of Leiningen , after its dissolution by the Rhine Confederation Act in 1806, to the Grand Duchy of Baden . Due to the attack in Baden in an initially unfavorable peripheral location, viticulture and wine trade came to an almost complete standstill. It only improved after the middle of the 19th century with the construction of the railway.

At the end of the Second World War , fierce fighting took place on the Turmberg at Easter 1945 when the US troops marched in, as a result of which Königshofen was destroyed to three quarters on April 1, 1945.

On January 1, 1972, the Württemberg was Deubach incorporated to Königshofen and so came from the district Mergentheim for district Tauberbischofsheim ; on the same day, Messelhausen and Sachsenflur were also incorporated into Königshofen. Just one year later, the Tauberbischofsheim district was dissolved as part of the district reform. Since then, the area of today's city has belonged to the Main-Tauber district . On January 1, 1975, the city of Königshofen merged with the city of Lauda and the community of Unterbalbach as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg to form the city of Lauda-Königshofen.
