history
Early history
A prehistoric settlement of the northern ridge above Messelhausen and Vilchband by the Celts around 500 BC. BC is proven by barrows . Around 600 to 800 the clan of the Frankish leader Ballo settled in the valley.
middle Ages
In a document dated December 16, 1219 Oberbalbach was first mentioned as "Ballenbach", and in 1260 a "Hermanus de Superiori Balbach" was named. An earlier castle is suspected to be on the Sassenberg; however, it is not clear whether it really existed. For centuries the place belonged to several rulers at the same time, in 1539 the villagers belonged to seven different rulers. Since about 1568 the von Zobel were the main owners of Oberbalbach. Another owner was the German Knight Order , which repeatedly led to disputes. During the Thirty Years War the Swedes destroyed the village on their retreat in 1634. The surrounding farms of Laubertsbrunn, Riedershof, Täxenheim, Rödelsee and Hagenfeld probably went out at that time. However, their existence is not assured.
Modern times
In 1806 part of the Oberbalbach property went to Baden , another part to the Kingdom of Württemberg , which led to bloody unrest. In 1810 Oberbalbach finally became Baden. In 1813 the place belonged to the District Office Boxberg , 1833 District Office Gerlachsheim , 1864 District Office Tauberbischofsheim .
The school was rebuilt in 1850, the church was expanded in 1888 and a new rectory was built in 1894. In 1920 Oberbalbach received electricity and in 1928 it was connected to the water supply.
During the Second World War , 49 men from the village lost their lives. At Easter 1945 ten farms were badly damaged, and the village archives were also affected, causing many sources to be lost.
In the course of the municipality reform in Baden-Württemberg , the previously independent municipality of Oberbalbach became part of the newly formed municipality of Lauda-Königshofen on January 1, 1975.
