The or the Vorbach is a 24.6 km long brook in the northeast of Baden-Württemberg , which arises near Schrozberg in the northwestern district of Schwäbisch Hall and after a predominantly northern course at Weikersheim flows from the left into the middle Tauber .

origin of the name

According to Carlheinz Gräter , the first traditional spelling is fortana , which is interpreted in two different ways, as "Föhrenbach" and "Forellenbach". According to the Oberamtsbeschreibung (around 1880) it is called "forhana" (pine, forche) or "forahana" (trout).

geography

course

The source of the Vorbach is about 2 km west-southwest of the center of Schrozberg , Schwäbisch Hall district , on the western edge of the Hirschschlag forest at about 471  m . From here, the Quellbach runs in a very straight line towards Schrozberg, crosses under the L 1022 and the Crailsheim – Königshofen railway line one after the other, and after a good kilometer it takes in its first tributary, the Hetzengraben , which emerges on the northern edge of the Oberlohe forest Hetzenbrunnen , located at an altitude of 471  m , has its source and when it flowed about 900 meters, it flowed mainly in northerly directions. Sometimes this Hetzenbrunnen is also seen as a Vorbach spring. The Vorbach flows parallel to the railway line until shortly after the entrance to Schrozberg, where it crosses the so-called Schafsee , then about 500 m further to Schrozberg Castle. In its vicinity, in the so-called Gailwiesle , another spring branch flows towards it, which, however, has meanwhile been rotten; The name of Vorbachstrasse in the south of the town center has kept from this. Below the castle, the still small river begins a wide curve to the left, where it sinks noticeably into the plateau. After the Upper Talmühle, about two kilometers further down the valley, it then continues its course in gentle valley meanders in a west-northwest direction. A little later it crosses over to the Niederstetten district, first flowing through the Oberstetten flood retention basin (with a permanent retention area of over 1 ha) and then the suburb of Oberstetten itself, where its largest tributary, the Reutalbach , flows from the right. While the valley slopes were mostly wooded from Schrozberg up to this point, they are mostly exposed in the further course. On the following stage of the river to Niederstetten, the river also forms a clear meadow and in its meadow meander.

A rock group from Kalksinter above Niederstetten is called a temple and regularly serves as an open-air stage . The rock formation was created by seepage springs; one of them was framed and bears the name Kindlesbrunnen . In Niederstetten the Vorbach reaches the Frickentalbach from the left , after which it continues to flow mainly in northerly directions, passing through the valley villages Vorbachzimmer and Haagen as well as Laudenbach, where the Ebertsbronn Bach flows from the right . Then the Vorbach takes a slow left curve to Weikersheim, where shortly before the historic town center the approximately 1 km long Mühlkanal branches off to the left, which previously supplied water to the Vorbachmühle and the Stadtmühle and is still used today at the Vorbachmühle to generate electricity. Less than 150 m from each other, both arms flow in a north-westerly direction at 221  m into the Tauber, which flows south here; together with it, they delimit the island of Heiliges Wöhr , on which the educational center and dormitory of the German section of Jeunesses Musicales International is located.

Catchment area

The Vorbach has a catchment area of 116.4 km², the karst structure of which can be seen in the several dry valleys and dry upper valleys of the tributaries. It extends to parts of the Schrozberg, Niederstetten and Weikersheim markings.

The watershed runs in the east of the lower reaches of the Rindbach, which flows parallel to the Tauber near Creglingen . Further upstream in the south, the catchment areas of Herrgottsbach and Schandtauber border one after the other .

Then the catchment area boundary bends to the west and surrounds Schrozberg in the south, here competing beyond tributaries of the Jagst tributary Brettach , especially the Blaubach . To the west of Schrozberg the border bends to the northwest, here the Ette also flows to the Jagst on the other side .

Then the watershed bends north in front of the Aschbach , which again runs parallel to the Vorbach and runs to the Tauber . Last but not least, in the north-west, the smaller Tauber tributary Dürrbach intervenes.

Nature and protected areas

Water quality

As of 2004, the Vorbach was moderately polluted along its entire course from the east arch directly to Schrozberg to the mouth (quality class II).

Water protection area

The Vorbachwiese Weikersheim water protection area designated by ordinance of May 10, 1999 with WSG no. 128138 covers a protected area of 559.9 hectares.

environment

There are many rough meadows and stone bars on the slopes of the Vorbach valley . Above all, the slopes used as pasture are very valuable biotopes for rare plants. The common pasque flower and silver thistle stand out in a few locations , as well as some types of orchid such as the pyramidal dogwort and the orchid herb .

wine growing

Wine is grown in the Vorbachtal between Oberstetten and Weikersheim, and the Tauberschwarz variety is a local specialty. In the middle course near Niederstetten, cultivation has declined sharply over the past 50 years due to low profitability. The traditional vineyards are located on steep slopes , they are very narrow and often do not allow straight lines. In Laudenbach and Vorbachzimmer land consolidations made it possible to continue to use the land profitably.

traffic

The Vorbach is on the entire length of the railway line Crailsheim-Königshofen and the country road traversed 1,001th
